Finding Stillness - Observing

Finding Stillness is a weekly series on ways I find stillness without meditating. follow the tag to read the other posts.

Earlier this week I was writing in my living room, sitting by the large table in front of the window.

Then, our cat Shadow suddenly leaped up, chattering, his eyes firmly affixed on something outside, stalking forward.

I looked up and saw a gorgeous magpie sitting on the edge of the balcony, preening his feathers. He carefully moved his beak up and down through them, first left, then right.

He was unmoved by Shadow, who leaped up into the windowsill, still chattering.

The magpie looked straight at me for one moment and then jumped onto the lid of the box where we keep our outdoor cushions.

The magpie shook his body out, and then sat with his feathers wide, basking in the sunlight. It was so beautiful I took a deep gasp.

And then I smiled, knowing I had found stillness, in observing the magpie. I also knew that this week's post had to be about him. I love that so much, the way every week something seemingly small inspires me to write these posts.

Ever since my magpie adventures with Shadow, I have started to observe more. I saw so much. It is not only a way to find stillness. It is a way to be fully present in my own world. And that is a wonderful gift for a writer whose mind is always working on something writing related 😇
